As other vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians may cross or enter your path at any time, you should look to the sides to make sure no one is coming. This is especially true at intersections, railroad crossings, or when changing lanes. Remember, to be a good driver, you must know what is happening around your vehicle. You must look ahead, to the sides, and behind your vehicle.

Turn on your headlights when driving away from a rising or setting sun. Drivers approaching you may have trouble seeing your vehicle, but your headlights will help them see you.

If another driver fails to dim the lights, look toward the right side of the road. This will keep you from being blinded by the other vehicle's headlights and allow you to see enough of the edge of the road to stay on course. Do not try to get back at other drivers by keeping your bright lights on. If you do, both of you may be blinded.

Remain stopped until the gates are raised and the lights stop flashing. Never attempt to drive around the lowered gate. Malfunctioning warning devices should be reported. Look for emergency notification signs or contact local police.

Entering traffic must yield the right-of-way to circulating traffic. Each road approaching the roundabout is marked with a yield sign and may have yield line markings on the pavement.

Before you drive away, always fasten your safety belts and ensure all your passengers use safety belts or child restraints. Remember that Connecticut has a mandatory seatbelt law.

If the solid yellow line is on your side of the road, do not pass. You should only pass others if there is a broken yellow line on your side.

Motorcyclists have the right to use a complete traffic lane. Don't pass a motorcycle in the same lane. The rider needs space to react to other traffic. Motorcycles are small and, therefore, more difficult to see and determine what they will do.

When it rains or the road is wet, most tires have good traction up to about 35 mph. As you go faster, however, your tires will ride upon the water like water skis. This is called hydroplaning. In heavy rain, your tires can lose all traction with the road. Bald or badly worn tires will lose traction at much lower speeds. The best way to keep from hydroplaning is to slow down in the rain or when the road is wet.

There is no way to sober up quickly. Coffee, fresh air, exercise, vitamins, sleep, or cold showers will not help. Time is the only thing that will sober you up.

Reduction in Lanes. This sign is used on multi-lane highways to warn you of a reduction in the number of traffic lanes in the direction you are traveling. Be prepared to change lanes or to allow other vehicles to merge into your lane.

You must give the right-of-way to a pedestrian with a guide dog or a white cane. Stop and stay stopped if the person is attempting to cross or is in the process of crossing the road. At regulated intersections, remain stopped until the pedestrian is out of the road, even if you have a green light.

Do not be afraid to sound a sharp blast on your horn if there is danger. Do this: D

• When a child or older person is about to walk, run, or ride into the street.
• When another vehicle is in danger of hitting you.
• When you have lost control of your vehicle and are moving toward someone.

A flashing round yellow signal means slow down and proceed with caution.

Overpasses and other types of bridges can have icy spots. The pavement on bridges can be icy even when the rest of the road is not. Bridges tend to freeze before the rest of the road does. This is because bridges do not have earth underneath them to help insulate them against the cold, and thus, they can be colder and icier than other roadways.

When entering traffic, try to enter at the same speed that traffic is moving. High-speed roadways generally have ramps to give you time to build up your speed. Use the ramp to reach the speed of other vehicles before you pull onto the road. Do not exceed the speed limit!

Before a long trip, you should get adequate sleep and schedule proper breaks (every 100 miles or 2 hours). Avoid alcohol and sedating medications. It is a good idea to arrange for a travel companion (someone to talk with and share the driving). Try not to drive late at night, between midnight and 6 a.m. While Driving, you should watch for the warning signs of fatigue. If you are tired, stop driving. Drink caffeine and take a short nap.

Slippery when wet. When pavement is wet, reduce your speed. Do not brake hard or change direction suddenly. Increase the distance between your car and the one ahead. These actions are needed on all wet roads, especially where this sign is posted.

In Connecticut, driving a car while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is a criminal offense. A driver may be prosecuted even without direct evidence of their BAC. The determining factor is whether a person's driving ability has been impaired. Many other drugs can affect a person's ability to drive safely. These drugs can have effects like those of alcohol or even worse. This is true of many prescription drugs and even many over-the-counter drugs.

At a four-way stop, the driver reaching the intersection first goes first (after coming to a complete stop). If more than one vehicle arrives at the same time, the one on the right goes first.

All temporary signs in work zones have an orange background and black letters or symbols. Orange warning signs alert drivers to possible dangers associated with construction and maintenance projects.

A bicycle sharrow, two chevrons painted above a bicycle symbol on the road, indicates the lane is shared. Vehicle or bicycle traffic may be in the lane. Although you should always keep an eye on bicyclists, this serves as an additional warning to watch for bicycles in the lane. Shared Lane Markings are not the same as the bicycle symbols that are used to mark bicycle lanes.

If you drink alcohol, even a little, your chances of being in an accident are much greater than if you did not have any alcohol.

Before you pass other vehicles, look further down the road for conditions and traffic that may cause other vehicles to move into your lane.

Occasionally, you may be followed closely or tailgated by another driver. If you are being followed too closely and there is a right lane, move over to the right. If there is no right lane, wait until the road ahead is clear, then reduce speed slowly. This will encourage the tailgater to drive around you. Never slow down quickly to discourage a tailgater. It increases your risk of being hit from behind.
