Heavy rain frequently causes flash floods in Arizona washes. Do not cross-flooded washes. Water can stall your engine, hide potholes, and carry your vehicle downstream. Seek an alternate route. A driver of a vehicle who drives around barricades set up due to flooding is liable for the expenses of any emergency response.

Whenever a police car, fire engine, ambulance or other emergency vehicle approaches using a siren, lights or other warning devices, you must yield the right-of-way. Drive at once to the right side of the road and stop until the vehicle has passed. Do not block intersections. The law requires you to stop clear of any intersection.

The triangle shape requires that you yield the right-of-way to cross or merge traffic. The shape of a traffic sign can give you as much information about the meaning of a sign as the sign's color or wording. When visibility is poor, such as in heavy rain, dust storms, or fog, you may be able to make out only the shape of a particular sign.

You can use the three-six second rule to determine if you have enough cushion between you and the vehicle you follow. Sometimes you will need more than a three-second cushion (like when road conditions are poor). At high speeds, the distance your vehicle travels while you are reacting to a problem is greater, and your margin for error is less. If you are following too closely, you may not be able to stop in time.

Approach with your car in the traffic lane nearest the left curb. Turn without swinging wide.

Most rear-end crashes are caused by following too closely. If another driver follows you too closely, move to another lane if there is room, or gradually slow down and move to the right. These actions should encourage the tailgater to pass you. Remember, what you do can affect the driver behind you, especially if you must stop suddenly.

A double solid white line separates two lanes of traffic going in the same direction. Crossing a double solid white line is prohibited.

When approaching a school bus that is picking up or dropping off passengers, you must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus, regardless of your direction of travel. You are not required to stop for a school bus on a divided roadway when traveling in the opposite direction. A divided roadway is one in which the road is separated by physical barriers such as a fence, curbing, or separation of the pavement. Roadway striping alone does not count as a physical separation of the roadway.

Watch for vehicles such as buses and gasoline tankers, which must stop at railroad crossings. Slow down and be prepared to stop.

Turn around to look directly through the rear window. Do not depend only on your mirrors or a backup camera. Back up slowly.

Avoid using the right lane of a freeway during rush hour. This will leave room for vehicles entering and exiting. The right lane is used for entering, exiting, and slow traffic. The left lane is used by higher-speed traffic. Avoid following the car ahead of you too closely.

Divided Highway Ends. The divided highway on which you are traveling ends ahead. You will then be on an undivided roadway with two-way traffic. Keep to the right.

When passing, go all the way into the other lane. Besides having the legal right to an entire lane, the motorcyclist may need to swerve to avoid something on the road. Once you have passed, wait until you are well down the road before moving back into the other lane. Returning to the original lane too soon can force the rider to swerve into traffic or off the road.

It is unlawful to drive over or across any median or divided highway separation, except where an opening or crossover has been established by public authority.

The following speed limits must be observed when no limit is posted:

• 15 mph when approaching a school crossing
• 25 mph in any business or residential district.

You must dim your headlights when within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 200 feet when following another vehicle.

When approaching an intersection, be sure to check both left and right before proceeding.

Slow down as you approach the roundabout. Enter the roundabout when there is a big enough gap in traffic.

Double solid yellow lines mean passing is prohibited in either direction. You may not cross the lines unless you make a left turn.

A flashing red light has the same meaning as a stop sign. You must come to a full stop, then proceed with caution when the roadway is clear.

Traffic controls include traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings. Law enforcement, highway personnel, or school crossing guards can also provide traffic control. You must obey directions from these persons.

If the high beams of an oncoming car are not dimmed, avoid looking directly at the bright lights. Glance toward the right side of the road, then look ahead to determine the other vehicle's position. Keep doing this until you have passed the other vehicle.

Intersections are the most likely places for car/motorcycle collisions. This usually is the result of a car driver not seeing the motorcycle and turning into the motorcycle's path.

Lane use control signs to tell you where you can go and where you can turn and often use an arrow symbol. These signs can be located on the side of the road or hanging over the travel lane. Sometimes arrows may be painted on the road to supplement the signs.

Bridges and overpasses tend to freeze before the rest of the road does. They can hide spots of ice.

You must never park within the boundaries of an intersection. Parking in a disabled person parking space is allowed when you display a valid placard or license plate with the international symbol of access, and only when transporting the person who was issued the placard or plate.

When sharing a lane with a bicycle, allow at least three feet of clearance between you and the bicycle. Moderate your speed.

You must notify MVD within 10 days of any change to your address. If your current address is not on file, you may not receive renewal notices or other correspondence concerning your driver's license or vehicle records. Law enforcement may cite you if you do not change your address within 10 days.

Your blind spot is the area of the road you cannot see without moving your head and looking over your shoulder.

Slow down and be prepared to stop. You should always give blind persons the right-of-way, even if the traffic signals or other rules are not in their favor.
