The Real Illinois License Examination

The official Illinois license exam includes 35 questions. One section contains 15 questions on common road signs described in the study guide. The second section has 20 questions that test your knowledge of Illinois traffic laws and safe driving practices.

You must answer at least 28 questions correctly to pass. The passing score is 80%, combining both sections.

Questions are in multiple-choice or true-or-false format.

There is no time limit, so take your time to evaluate each question and answer carefully.

If you fail the knowledge test, you may retake it on the next business day. If you found the exam difficult, wait at least a week and take more practice tests before trying again.

Closed-Book Test

Remember, the license exam is a closed-book test. You may not bring the Illinois study guide, books, papers, or notes into the testing area.

You must turn off your cell phone and are not allowed to use it or any wireless devices during the test. Remove earbuds or headphones before starting.

Always follow the examiner’s instructions. If you are suspected of breaking the rules, you will receive a warning. If they believe you are cheating, you will fail the exam and must wait 30 days before retaking it.
