More Illinois DMV Test Questions
This second permit practice test for Illinois includes additional questions from the Secretary of State (SoS) to help you prepare for your Illinois driver’s license or learner’s permit.
Becoming a safe driver is a complex and sometimes tedious process. It involves studying the rules of the road, learning safe driving techniques, and operating a vehicle responsibly. We offer free test prep questions to help with the first. Professional driver education and training can help with the second.
How to Get Your First Permit
The practice test questions and information at freedmvtest.org are provided to help you evaluate your current knowledge of safe driving and Illinois traffic laws.
Illinois, like all states, has a graduated licensing program for teens. This program allows young drivers to gain experience and gradually learn how to handle complex driving situations.
At age 15, you may apply for an Illinois instruction permit with the written consent of a parent or legal guardian.
Illinois issues the permit after you complete an approved driver education course and pass both the written knowledge test and a vision test.
Practice Driving with Your First Permit
With your instruction permit, you may practice driving under the supervision of a licensed parent or adult age 21 or older. The supervising driver must sit in the front passenger seat.
While holding an instruction permit, the number of passengers is limited to one in the front seat and only as many passengers in the back seat as there are seat belts. You are not allowed to drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, or between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
Before moving on to the initial licensing phase, you must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
When Can You Drive Alone?
You may drive alone once you are 16, have held your instruction permit for at least nine months without any traffic convictions, and have received your initial driver’s license.
With an initial license, you may drive without supervision, but you must still follow restrictions such as curfew hours and passenger limits.
Your license becomes a full, unrestricted driver’s license when you turn 18.
