No-zones are danger areas around large vehicles where crashes are more likely to occur. These zones are blind spots to the vehicle's front, sides, and rear.

When following motorcycles, you need more space in front of your vehicle. If the motorcycle should fall, you need extra distance to avoid the rider. The chances of a fall are greatest on wet or icy roads, gravel roads, or metal surfaces such as bridges, gratings, streetcars, or railroad tracks.

You must yield to traffic already on the highway. Remember that the highway traffic has the right-of-way. Most entrance ramps have a yield sign to remind you of that.

Keep Left. This sign tells you where to drive when you approach traffic islands, medians, or other obstructions in the middle of the roadway. You must drive to the side indicated by the arrow.

Shared center lanes are reserved for making left turns (or U-turns when permitted) but can be used by vehicles traveling in both directions. On the pavement, left-turn arrows for traffic in one direction alternate with left-turn arrows for traffic from the other direction. Solid yellow and dashed yellow lines mark these lanes on each side.

At a four-way stop, the driver reaching the intersection first goes first (after coming to a complete stop). If more than one vehicle arrives at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first.

Never park a car on a crosswalk.

Lane-use control signals are special signals posted by the side of the road or overhead. They indicate whether you should or should not drive in a specific lane. A green arrow means you can use the lane. A red X means you cannot. A flashing yellow X means the lane is only for turning. A steady yellow X means that the use of the lane is changing, and you should move out of it as soon as it is safe.

Flashing red signal light, red arrow, and steady red circular signal all mean stop.

Child safety seats should be in the car's rear seat if the vehicle has a back seat. Rear-facing child safety seats should never be placed in the front seat when an airbag is enabled.

Don't pass a motorcycle in the same lane. The bike needs space to react to other traffic.

This sign warns that a flagger is ahead. Always follow his or her directions. Flaggers normally wear orange or yellow vests, yellow-green shirts, or jackets. They use stop/slow paddles and red flags to direct traffic through the work zone and to let workers or construction vehicles cross the road.

A green arrow means you can safely turn in the direction of the arrow. There should be no on-coming or crossing traffic while the arrow is green. Such a turn is known as a protected turn. Remember, it does not mean that a red light stops all other traffic.

Never make a U-turn on an expressway. Remember, U-turns are not legal everywhere. So before you make a U-turn, check for signs prohibiting them.

Never use your high beams when following a truck at night. The glare in the large side mirrors can blind the truck driver.

To be a good driver, you must know what is happening around your vehicle. You must look ahead, to the sides, and behind the vehicle. Scanning helps you to see problems ahead, vehicles and people that may be on the road by the time you reach them, signs warning of difficulties ahead, and signs giving you directions. Remember, take in the whole scene. If you only look at the middle of the road, you will miss what is happening on the side and behind you.

Never drive if you are sleepy. Warning signs of fatigue include yawning or rubbing your eyes repeatedly. Pull off at the next exit, rest area, or find a place to sleep for the night.

Get out of the way and do not acknowledge the other driver. Avoid eye contact, ignore gestures and name-calling, and refuse to return them. Do not use your vehicle as a weapon to retaliate. If a motorist pursues you, do not go home. Instead, drive to a police station, convenience store, or other public and well-lit location where you can get help.

Never pass on the shoulder, whether it is paved or not. Other drivers will never expect you to be there and may pull off the road without looking.

There is no way to sober up quickly. Coffee, fresh air, exercise, vitamins, sleep, or cold showers will not help. Time is the only thing that will sober you up.

Braking distance is affected by the pavement condition. A wet pavement can double your braking distance.

A double solid white line separates two lanes of traffic going in the same direction. Crossing a double solid white line is prohibited.

Do not be afraid to sound a sharp blast on your horn if there is danger. For example, you should do this when another vehicle is in danger of hitting you. Avoid using your horn around bicyclists and blind pedestrians.

Bridges and overpasses tend to freeze before the rest of the road does. They can hide spots of ice.

If you are driving, check the label before you take a drug for warnings about its effects. If you are not sure it is safe to take the drug and drive, ask your doctor or pharmacist about any side effects. Many drugs can affect a person's ability to drive safely. These drugs can have effects like those of alcohol or even worse. Negative effects are true of many prescription drugs, and even many over-the-counter drugs.
