The Written Knowledge Test for Your Georgia Permit

The Georgia driver’s knowledge exam has 40 test questions separated into two parts:

1   20 road signs questions

2   20 road rules questions

The first part tests your knowledge of Georgia road signs, including the use of colors and shapes.

The second part checks your knowledge of standard road rules, Georgia traffic laws, and safe driving practices. You should also know about distracted and impaired driving, including the laws about drinking and driving and how alcohol affects you.

To pass the exam, you need 15 correct answers on each part (75%). You will not pass if you have 20 correct answers on the road signs part and only ten on the road rules part.

Learning Georgia Road Signs and Their Meanings for Your Learner’s Permit

The road signs you need to learn for your Georgia learner’s permit are all described in the Georgia Drivers Manual  . Always make sure you have the latest version of the manual.

Georgia DDS Manual 2023/2024

There are more than 70 road signs mentioned in the manual. You should know them by name and how to act or react when you see any of them on Georgia highways.

Road signs aim to keep you and other road users safe. They communicate messages to drivers and pedestrians to help traffic flow smoothly and reduce accidents. Neglecting or not understanding the meaning of a road sign can be dangerous.

Most signs today use symbols instead of words, so even drivers who speak another language can understand them.

Georgia, however, still used many signs with word messages. For this reason, you must understand basic English.

You should also know that the road signs part of the exam is in English only.

Remember that you will find even more signs on Georgia roads than the ones described in your manual, some less common but still crucial for your safety.

This is not the Real Road Sign Test

Even if some of these questions may appear on your actual knowledge exam at the Georgia Department of Driver Services, it differs from the real test. We have published this and the blank road sign test (below) only to help you study and learn the most common signs.
