Use low-beam lights when driving in fog or heavy rain. High beams cause the light to be reflected into your eyes.

Road surfaces are the most slippery during the first few minutes of a rainfall.

Your speed should be no faster than 60 mph. Driving at a speed exceeding a posted speed limit is always unlawful.

Chances of hydroplaning increase as speeds increase.

Crossroad (intersection). A road crosses the main highway ahead. Look in all directions for other traffic.

Never park within 10 feet of a fire hydrant.

Turn around to look directly through the rear window. Do not depend only on your mirrors or a backup camera. Back up slowly.

If you hit a parked vehicle, you must notify the police and try to find its owner.

You must obey signals from a law enforcement officer, even if the officer's signals contradict the traffic signal. A person with a sign or flag may control traffic in work areas. You must obey these people. In connection with fires and accidents, you must also obey instructions from firefighters. Near schools, obey signals from any crossing guards.

If you miss your exit ramp, never back up, turn around, or use a median crossover. Instead, drive to the next exit.

As the strips vibrate the steering wheel and make a noise, they will wake the motorist, who may have dozed off, or caution the motorist about the danger ahead. Rumble strips will not damage a vehicle.

Exit ramps or deceleration lanes are extra lanes at a highway exit. They are usually located on the right-hand side of the roadway. When entering a deceleration lane, start slowing down. Obey the posted advisory speed limit of the deceleration lane.

All GDL drivers under age 21 who possess a permit or probationary license must display two visible, red reflective decals distributed through the MVC on any vehicle they operate. One decal is to be displayed on the top left corner of the rear license plate and the other on the top left corner of the front license plate.

State law prohibits using handheld electronic devices (e.g., cellular telephones) while driving a motor vehicle on any public road or highway. A handheld cellular telephone may be used only in certain emergency situations, which include:

• Fire
• Traffic accident
• Serious road hazard
• Medical emergency
• Hazardous material emergency

The safest place for a child to sit is in the back seat. The back middle seat is best. Infant seats must face the back of the vehicle. Never put a back-facing child safety seat in the front passenger seat if your vehicle has an airbag for that seat.

Winding road ahead. The road ahead is winding, with a series of turns or curves. Slow down and drive carefully.

Dashed lines on a motorist's side of the road's center line mean that passing is permitted when safe. Remember, dashed lines are permissive in character, while solid lines are restrictive.

You must yield to the motorist on the right at a multiway or stop intersection if you get there simultaneously. You must also yield to another motorist who has stopped at the intersection.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas in a vehicle's exhaust. Some conditions can cause dangerous levels of CO to accumulate in or around a car, with potentially fatal results. These conditions include idling a vehicle in a garage or confined space, even with open outside garage doors.

Airbags are standard equipment in almost all new vehicles. They are designed to supplement seat belts in frontal crashes, not replace them.

There is no way to sober up quickly. Coffee, fresh air, exercise, vitamins, sleep, or cold showers will not help. Time is the only thing that will sober you up.

The implied consent law means that you have agreed, simply by using New Jersey roadways, to submit to a breath test given by law enforcement or hospital staff following an arrest for a drinking-and-driving offense. Motorists who refuse to take a breath test will be detained and brought to a hospital, where hospital staff may draw blood. Under state law, refusal to take a breath test is equal to driving with a BAC of .10 percent for a first offense. The current penalty for both is the loss of driving privileges for seven months to one year, to run concurrently or consecutively, based upon a judge's order (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.4a). Motorists who refuse a breath test in New Jersey are also subject to a violation surcharge of $1,000 annually for three years (N.J.S.A. 17:29A-35). Failure to pay this surcharge will result in an indefinite suspension of driving privileges until the fee is paid.

If a train approaches, run at a 45-degree angle away from the vehicle and tracks but in the direction of the train to avoid being injured by flying debris.

No U-Turn. You cannot turn around to go in the opposite direction at this intersection. Remember, a red circle with a red slash from upper left to lower right means NO.

Motorists may sound the horn when passing another vehicle when not in a business or residential zone.
