Motor vehicle liability insurance is mandatory in the State of New Jersey. Every vehicle registered in New Jersey must have liability insurance. A New Jersey Insurance Identification Card will be provided and must remain in the vehicle with the driver. It must be shown before inspection, when involved in an accident, and when stopped by law enforcement for a traffic violation or roadside spot check.

If the solid yellow line is on your side of the road, do not pass. You should only pass others if there is a broken yellow line on your side.

Tailgating refers to following too closely behind a vehicle directly in front. It is a common cause of accidents, and when many vehicles are too close together, tailgating can cause a series of rear-end collisions.

Parking or auxiliary lights may not be used instead of headlights.

Slippery when wet. In wet weather, drive slowly. Do not speed up or brake hard. Make sharp turns at a very slow speed.

Before driving in reverse, a motorist must ensure the path is clear. Walk around to make sure nothing is in the vehicle's way. Children or small objects are hard to see from the driver's seat.

If a speed limit is not posted before a curve, you must judge how sharp the curve is and change your speed. Slow down before you enter the curve. Braking and turning at the same time may cause your car to skid.

If you park on an uphill grade with a curb, turn your wheels to the left.

Failure to wear a seatbelt by a driver, front-seat passenger, and children under age 18 is a primary offense. A police officer can stop a motorist solely for violating the seat belt law.

Do not cross the tracks until all signals have stopped and the crossing gate is up. Do not drive around or under a closed gate. It is dangerous and against the law.

It is an extremely frightening experience when a vehicle leaves the roadway and plunges into the water. Try to remain calm and remove your safety belt. While the car is still floating on the surface, to escape through an open window.

Headlights must be used between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise. They must also be used when visibility is 500 feet or less, when using windshield wipers (during rain, snow, and ice), or when encountering fog, mist, smoke, or other factors that reduce visibility.

A fluorescent and reflective orange triangular sign indicates slow-moving vehicles operating on public highways, such as farms and construction equipment.

Construction and maintenance signs notify drivers of possible danger in or near work areas. Most signs used in highway and street work areas are diamond-shaped. Orange is the basic color.

Blind spots are areas where you cannot see behind your vehicle (on both sides) through the mirrors. Inside and outside mirrors should be adjusted to reduce blind spots. You can check blind spots by turning your head and looking over your shoulder. When a lane change must be made, look at the rearview mirror. Then, glance behind by turning your head to check blind spots. Always signal lane changes. Check blind spots twice before changing lanes or making turns.

After alcohol, marijuana is the drug most often found with drivers involved in collisions. Marijuana use may affect a motorist in the following ways:

• Loss of tracking ability: This is the ability to maintain a vehicle in a given line.
• Distance judgment: Following too closely can cause problems.
• Vigilance: Not remaining attentive to the driving task can cause a motorist to follow too closely, drift into another lane, etc.
• Divided attention: Driving is a task that requires constant attention to traffic, roadway and weather conditions, passengers, gauges, etc.

The sign tells you that the road or street ahead is for one-way traffic traveling in the opposite direction. You must not drive into it from your direction.

An intersection is uncontrolled when two or more roads join, and no traffic signal or regulatory device exists. Generally, the vehicle on the left should yield to the vehicle on the right.

A motorist who changes addresses must report this change to the MVC within one week after moving.

You must turn on the turn signal at least 100 feet before turning and be sure to cancel the signal after making a turn.

Proceed as shown by the arrow when shown alone or in combination with the red signal. Be cautious and yield to pedestrians. Green arrows indicated protected turns. Oncoming traffic is stopped by a red light.

Hospital is a word message sign or an H symbol sign. If used at intersections, general service signs like this are accompanied by a directional message.
