A roundabout is a one-way, circular intersection in which all traffic travels counterclockwise, always to the right, around a central island. Because roundabout traffic enters or exits only through right turns, severe crashes are substantially reduced.

When a stop sign, traffic light, flashing light, or other traffic-control device requires a vehicle to stop at an intersection, the driver must stop at the appropriately marked stop line. If there is no stop line or marked crosswalk, drivers must stop before entering the intersection where they have a view of the intersecting street.

The legal speed limit in school zones, business, or residential districts is 25 mph.

To hold on to the road properly, tires must match (do not mix radials with other tire types) and have enough tread. Bumps, cuts, or bad tread can cause blowouts. Bald or badly worn tires increase stopping distances and the chance of hydroplaning on wet road surfaces.

Most rear-end crashes are caused by following too closely.

Motorists in an emergency on the highway may attempt to turn off the vehicle while it is still in motion, believing they will bring the car to a stop. The basic rule the motorist must follow when operating a vehicle with a steering wheel ignition system is never to turn the ignition to the lock position while the car is in motion. The steering will lock as the vehicle turns, and the motorist will lose control.

You should always keep a safe distance from other vehicles on the road to have plenty of time to react to emergencies. Make sure there is enough room ahead to stop or pass safely at all times. Since most people have trouble judging distances, the three-second-plus rule to determine safe distance may be easier to use. It is helpful at any speed. Time and distance relationships are designed for the best driving conditions. During bad weather, the interval should be increased to four or more seconds.

Stop if a signal does not have any of its bulbs working and no one is directing traffic. A light out of order is considered a stop sign. Look left and right. Yield to traffic coming from the right or left. Be careful and go only when it is safe.

A motorist can reduce reaction distance by keeping a foot near the brake. The total distance it takes to stop a vehicle is the sum of perception distance, reaction distance, and braking distance.

Keep Right. You must pass only to the right of a roadway feature or obstruction.

Stop sign ahead. When you come to this sign, you should slow down and be ready to stop at the stop sign ahead.

A motorist should always increase the following distance with poor road conditions. During bad weather, the interval should be increased to four seconds or more.

You should always look for signs that warn of road hazards. You should look at least 12 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This means that you should be able to see an object far enough ahead so it takes at least 12 seconds to reach it. While driving at 25 mph on a clear road in a city, you should be able to see about a block ahead. Extra time to react is necessary when traffic is heavy, which means driving more slowly. By reducing speed, you gain time.

A motorist who operates a motor vehicle in the State of New Jersey must have a valid driver's license, a valid probationary license, or a validated New Jersey permit. The motorist must also have valid insurance and vehicle registration cards.

You may not drive a motor vehicle through a public or private property to avoid a traffic signal or sign. It is a motor vehicle violation to avoid obeying the requirements of a traffic control device. Operating a motor vehicle on public or private property to avoid a traffic control signal or sign will result in two points on your driving record.

Blind spots are areas where you cannot see behind your vehicle (on both sides) through the mirrors. Inside and outside mirrors should be adjusted to reduce blind spots. You can check blind spots by turning your head and looking over your shoulder. When a lane change must be made, look at the rearview mirror. Then, glance behind by turning your head to check blind spots. Always signal lane changes. Check blind spots twice before changing lanes or making turns.

If a vehicle's wheels drift onto the shoulder of the road, do not turn back onto the pavement immediately. This might throw the vehicle off balance. Too often, motorists panic and steer abruptly to return to the road, causing the vehicle to slingshot across the roadway or into traffic. Instead, a motorist should stay on the shoulder and ease up on the gas pedal. After the vehicle has slowed to 25 mph or less, the motorist may turn back onto the road by turning the steering wheel one-quarter toward the roadway. This will allow tires to climb the pavement edge and get back onto the pavement. If a vehicle runs off the pavement:

• Slow down.
• Regain control.
• Turn slowly onto the road.

Divided Highway Ends. The divided highway on which you are traveling ends ahead. You will then be on an undivided roadway with two-way traffic. Keep to the right.

Whenever a police car, fire engine, ambulance or other emergency vehicle approaches using a siren, lights or other warning devices, you must yield the right-of-way. Drive at once to the right side of the road and stop until the vehicle has passed. Do not block intersections. The law requires you to stop clear of any intersection.

A flashing red traffic signal light means stop. You must yield to traffic and pedestrians. Go only when safe. The light will NOT stop flashing or turn green.

No speed is safe in all situations. Always slow down:

• On narrow or winding roads.
• At intersections or railroad crossings.
• On hills.
• At sharp or blind curves.
• Where there are pedestrians or driving hazards.
• When the road is wet or slippery.

White dashed or broken lines separate traffic lanes on multi-lane highways. Broken lines are permissive in character.

Eight-sided red stop signs mean you must make a complete stop.

Don't get your vehicle trapped on the tracks. Only proceed through a railroad-grade crossing if you can completely clear the crossing without stopping. Remember that a train cannot stop quickly or swerve out of the way. If you are on the tracks, you risk injury or death.

When you're headed downhill, turn your front wheels into the curb or toward the side of the road. Then, set the parking brake.
