If you’re planning to get your first New Jersey driver’s license or learner’s permit, one of the first steps is passing the New Jersey written knowledge test.
This important exam checks your understanding of the rules of the road, traffic signs, driving laws, and safe driving practices. To help you prepare, we’ve created a series of sample practice tests that reflect the format and content of the official New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) exam.
Each sample test has 25 questions – shorter than the real written test, which has 50 questions.
New Jersey MVC Practice Test – 1
Before diving into the tests, it’s essential to understand the licensing process, the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program for teen drivers, and what to expect on the written test itself.
Requirements to Get Your First New Jersey License
For most first-time drivers under the age of 21, New Jersey follows a Graduated Driver License (GDL) system. The steps to obtaining your first license are as follows:
- Be at least 16 years old to apply for a special learner’s permit.
- Pass a vision screening and the MVC knowledge test.
- Enroll in a licensed driving school (if under 17).
- Complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training (if under 17).
- Practice supervised driving for at least 6 months.
- Pass the road test to get a probationary license.
- Drive unsupervised for at least 1 year before applying for a basic license.
The steps may vary if you’re 17 or older, but the core process is the same.
What Is the Graduated Driver License (GDL) Program?
The GDL program is designed to gradually introduce driving privileges to new drivers. It has three stages:
- Learner’s Permit (16+) – Requires supervised driving with a licensed adult.
- Probationary License (17+) – Allows unsupervised driving with restrictions.
- Basic Driver License (18+) – Full driving privileges with no restrictions.
Each stage includes specific restrictions, such as curfew hours (no driving between 11:01 PM and 5:00 AM), passenger limitations, and a requirement to display red GDL decals on the vehicle.
